Windermere was established in 1889 and works hard to retain a small town feel. For instance, many local streets remain unpaved and street name signs are white concrete posts. It is located on an isthmus between several lakes in the Lake Butler chain. Windermere has been the residence of many professional sports figures. However, many celebrities actually live in the Isleworth gated community which is outside the town limits of Windermere but utilize the Windermere mailing address.
Dr. Phillips
The area of Dr. Phillips is named after Dr. Phillip Phillips, a Central Florida citrus magnate. He was responsible for several key innovations in the processing and packaging of orange juice. This area is just 10 minutes from Disney World and 20 minutes from downtown Orlando. It consists of upscale neighborhoods along the Butler Chain of Lakes, one of the cleanest fresh water lakes in the area. Recreation is prevalent in the Dr. Phillips area, with two golf courses nearby (at Bay Hill Country Club and Orange Tree Country Club) and several city parks. Most neighborhoods offer private parks, pools, playgrounds, gyms, docks and tennis courts. There are public access beaches to some of the lakes on the chain allowing boating and fishing for all.
