Formerly known as Orlando’s Antique District, Ivanhoe Village is the new name for the 1.36 miles of Orange Ave between Lakeview and Hazel Streets. It’s not clear exactly when the area first became known as the Antique District but it was definitely due to the overwhelming number of antique stores. During its prime in the 1980’s, the area boasted 75 such shops; they make up less than 10 of the 83 retailers in the district today.
The departure of so many antique stores has made room for a plethora of diverse newcomers, such as chic clothing boutiques, a Pilate’s studio and an artsy little flower shop. In addition there’s a nice spa, furniture and accessory shops and even a couple of wine stores.
There is a new vegan restaurant that joins oldies but goodies such as Brian’s and White Wolf Café. Although the district will likely keep its original antique flavors, the arrival of so many non-antique retailers made a name change inevitable.
Enter the Main Street Program- Developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Main Street is a city or state coordinated program designed to protect and revitalize neighborhood commercial districts. With the help of a $50,000 grant from the city plus a $15,000 corporate sponsorship from Florida Hospital, the board and subsequent communities have worked to create a new look and brand for Ivanhoe Village.
